Just a few miles north of George Vanderbilt’s grand Biltmore Estate is a different kind of mansion–one that was nearly 50 years old when Vanderbilt’s crew began construction in 1895. This house, called the Smith-McDowell House, is now home to the Western North Carolina Historical Association and the Asheville Museum of History.

The Sojourners will travel to the Smith-McDowell House on Wednesday, July 17, to learn about the history of the diverse region of western North Carolina we call home.  Through gallery displays inside the home, we will find exhibits covering thousands of years of western North Carolina history including what part the Smith-McDowell House played in the cultural history of the Asheville area.

During the Sojourners time at the museum, we will have an opportunity to find out more about the Smith-McDowell family as we take a behind-the-scenes docent tour of a couple of the room at the house that have been restored.

Our visit to the museum will begin at 1:00 PM and will end at approximately 2:30 PM.   Donation for the museum visit/tour is 5.00.

Prior to the visit to the museum, we have a seating time of 11:30 AM at the Village Wayside Bar and Grille located in the old train depot in Biltmore Village.  You will be ordering from the menu and the cost of the meal will be your own.  Carpooling will be available from the church parking lot.
