Reflection

Today is my grandson's second birthday (or "dirtday" as he says). Being in his life nearly daily from his first breath to today has taught me more lessons than I thought my 71 years had yet to learn. First and foremost, Avram has taught, nay demanded, I be present in the moment. And in practicing the gift of presence, I see so much more of the world around me. The baby lizard scurrying across the porch, to whom Avram calls out, "Good morning, lizard!" Searching for the moon and planets high in the sky before dawn awakens the rest of the sleeping world. Coming inside, he announces to the whole household what wonders we have witnessed in the sky. Reaching for our hands at the supper table and saying "Pray" and offering thanks for what his wee mind is focused on at the moment (generally calling out the individual foods on this plate and naming each of us seated at the table) .

Avram has shown me how to be resilient. Exchanging time with his mom or dad every second or third day, he moves from household to household, each with its unique rhythm and priorities.

And then, there is joy. Oh, how he experiences joy! When we arrive at his school, he gleefully announces, "We are here!" and nearly bounces from his car seat to greet his teachers and classmates. Mornings are especially joy-filled as he bounds into our bedroom with "Hi, Grandpa Jack! Hi, Marmee!" Long before the sun has risen, he is ready to greet a new day with joy and anticipation of whatever lies ahead. This is how I want to spend my days as well - present in the moment, eagerly anticipating what God has for me to do in this new day!
